Amsterdam has a new internet of things network that allow objects to transmit data between each other.
The Things Network is a community-owned internet of things network that developers can build on without proprietary restrictions. The first of its kind, the network was entirely crowdsourced by citizens and was put together in only six weeks.
The network will use low-power, long-range, low-bandwidth technology to cover the city with a wireless signal that allows objects like boats, trash cans and street lights communicate.
The network uses LoraWAN technology, which allows devices to talk to the internet without 3G or WiFi. The city of Amsterdam was covered with only 10 gateways at the cost of $1200 each according to The Things Network.
