Dunedin’s Digital Strategy details a vision for “using digital technology to create a sustainable, prosperous and vibrant society”.
Released in 2010, the Dunedin Digital Strategy was Dunedin City Council’s first digital strategy, and was developed to “review what digital services are available today, understand the digital needs across the community and develop a digital vision for the city in the future”.
The strategy outlines four main goals: become a digitally connected, digitally enabled, digitally capable and digitally confident city.
- Digitally Connected: increase the access, affordability and quality of digital networks across the city
- Digitally Enabled: Deliver more digital content to the community and develop Dunedin as a centre for Digital Innovation
- Digitally Capable: raise level of digital knowledge, literacy and skills
- Digitally Confident: increase assurance that digital services are safe and reliable
Initiatives include:
- Remove impediments for installing digital networks
- 100% wireless coverage of central Dunedin city and 6 rural communities
- Increased availability of council services and digital services online
- Development of a Dunedin City portal
- Appointment of Digital Ambassadors to provide advice and guidance on digital services
- Increase access by schools to digital networks and digital resources
- Implement a city wide digital help-desk
More recently, Dunedin City Council participated in a joint initiative between the Central Otago, Clutha and Waitaki District Councils, and the Otago Regional Council to develop the Otago Digital Strategy 2013-2016, which outlines a digital strategy for the Otago region.
