Barcelona has been named as the 2015 Global Smart City.
The 2015 Smart City rankings, released by Juniper Research, ranked Barcelona as the worlds leading smart city, describing the Barcelona as “an exciting model of success from which others can learn, bolstered by strong environmentally sustainable initiatives”.
Barcelona has been a keen adopter of smart technologies, from smart lighting and smart parking, to smart road paint that absorbs CO2 emmissions from traffic.
The smart city rankings are based on an analysis of each city’s ‘smart’ capabilities, with emphasis on the use of smart grids, smart traffic management and smart street lighting, as well as technological capability and social cohesion.
The Top 5 Smart Cities for 2015 were:
- Barcelona
- New York
- London
- Nice
- Singapore
In 2014, Barcelona was named the European Capital of Innovation , and has been awarded the City Climate Leadership Award for its intelligent city infrastructure, and was winner of the 2014 Bloomberg Mayor’s Challenge.
Barcelona hosted the 2014 Smart City Expo, which showcased some of Barcelona’s leading smart technologies. The Expo attracted more than 6,000 participants from 51 cities around the globe.
